Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical technique that utilizes radar vibrations to form image of the deep sub-surface. GPR have applications in a range of media, including fresh water, ice, rock, soil, pavements and structures. Practitioners can employ GPR to identify subsurface objects, alterations in material properties, and cracks and voids. Ground-penetrating radar employs a range of technologies to produce the radar signal: these are frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW), impulse, stepped frequency etc.  Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has proven to be highly useful in the application field of landmine detection and classification. The ground penetrating radar market has been primarily led due to various factors such as growing demand for radars across the globe, rising geopolitical instabilities & territorial conflicts, rising need for assistance, safety and comfort features in vehicles. As a result, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technologies have been broadly used as a tool for the review of the structural strength of buildings and for the identification of cracks and voids. On this basis, the validation and development of GPR methodologies and algorithms shows one of the highly active research fields under the ELEDIA Research Center of the University of Trento. The great efforts have been used for the development of inversion methods based on the integration of stochastic search and deterministic algorithms with multi-focusing plans. These kinds of methods proved to be potential in justifying the effects of both ill-posedness and nonlinearity of microwave imaging issues, which shows the well-known problems rising in GPR inverse scattering formulations. Moreover, a regularized multi-resolution method based on the Inexact Newton Method (INM) which has been recently employed to subsurface prospecting, presenting a remarkable benefit over a single-resolution execution. Though, the real-time identification and classification of subsurface scatterers has been examined by means of learning-by-examples (LBE) methods, such as Support Vector Machines (SVM).

In spite of these favorable factors, the market has been restricted due to some negative factors such as high expertise required for GPR surveys and  high development cost. The market has huge potential due to growing demand for autonomous cars and growing military spending in developing countries. Some crucial challenges in the market are GPR systems are sensitive to noise interference and strict regulations on radar systems.

The ground penetrating radar market has been classified on the basis of application and technology. On the basis of application, it is segmented into military, archaeology, vehicle localization and other applications. In archaeology, GPR can be utilized to detect and map subsurface archaeological features, artifacts and patterning. The radar concept is familiar to maximum people. GPR can be a potential tool in positive conditions (uniform sandy soils are perfect). Similarly other geophysical methods utilized in archaeology, it can detect artifacts and map features with no risk of damaging them. Among techniques utilized in archaeological geophysics, GPR is unique both in its capability to detect some tiny objects at reasonably great depths, and in its potential to differentiate the depth of anomaly bases.

 

On the basis of technology, the market is segmented into impulse, stepped frequency, Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) and digital signal processing (DSP). The stepped frequency GPR is one of the major technology segments. The stepped-frequency continuous-wave GPR (SFCW-GPR) has several advantages, such as high measurement accuracy, lower noise, frequency steps selecting, greater dynamic range and easier frequency band. Thus, it is now increasingly popular. The SFCW-GPR is utilized to image buried objects and landmines.

 

Geographically, North America is the major region for ground penetrating radar market. The growth of the market in the region is primarily led due to high use of GPR for geologic survey. GPR has been utilized by the USGS (U.S, Geological Survey) in environmental, hydrologic, geologic, bridge-scour studies by mounting antennas in boats or floating antennas on water. Moreover, high adoption of radar sensors is also one major reason for the market growth in the region. Asia Pacific is also growing with the fastest rate due to growing automotive industry and military spending in the region.
