Fluorosurfactants are very effective in enhanced oil recovery techniques such as in improving subterranean wetting and in modifying the surface properties of the reservoir formation. Increasing demand of petroleum and benefits of fluorosurfactants has also increased the demand for fluorosurfactants in the petroleum industry. Petroleum is a vital energy source across the globe, majorly for transportation. In 2008, U.S. Department of Energy estimated global consumption of “liquids and other petroleum increased from 83.6 million barrels oil equivalent each day in 2005 to 95.7 million barrels each day in 2015 (+14%) and 112.5 million barrels each day by2030 (35%). The burden of enhancing oil demand and limited proven oil reserves as well as forecasts for shrinking oil supply are boosting the demand to increase the extraction of the Original Oil In-Place (OOIP) for each reservoir, which is expanding the development of EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) technologies. The crude oil and gas production happens in three different stages. The primary Oil Recovery combines the natural burden of the reservoir through pumping equipment to convey the oil to the surface that usually generates only up to approx. 10% of the OOIP. Amongst Secondary Oil Recovery, gas or water (i.e. natural gas, air and carbon dioxide) is added into the reservoir by utilizing pressure for pouring the oil to a wellbore, recovering further 20% to 40% of the OOIP. In addition, for foam injection EOR, the fluorosurfactants have the exceptional benefit to produce foam that is constant in touch with the crude oil, while absorbing and transporting oil by the subterranean formation. Due to these factors, the global fluorosurfactants market is expected to have a CAGR of approximately 10.2% during the forecast period.

Increasing use of EOR techniques increase the demand for fluorosurfactants in the market.
